Tanaka Taro walks the same streets every day, moving through them with a familiar rhythm. The new series, “My Neighbourhood Kokoro” collects the small moments he notices around the place: the things that sit in plain sight but rarely register, the scenes that stay with him for reasons he doesn’t need to explain.

He photographs the neighbourhood as it is. Not the highlights, not the postcard views, but the everyday details that give the area its character. Objects left where they don’t quite belong. Arrangements that seem unplanned but somehow right. The kinds of sights most people walk past without thinking, even though they quietly define the place.

In Japanese, kokoro (心) refers to the combined space of heart, mind, feeling, and intention. It’s a single word where English would split those ideas apart. “Kokoro” sits between these states. The neighbourhood is the subject, but the photographs are the record of what it gives back to him. Not documentary. Not nostalgia. Just presence.
