Discover the Uemachi Plateau, the spiritual and historical heart of Osaka. Explore centuries of Japanese heritage, from samurai strongholds to sacred shrines, from its origins as Naniwa to the influences on Osaka becoming the foundation of Japan’s reunification.

This full-day guided walking tour connects three of the city’s most iconic landmarks: the power of Osaka Castle, the spirit of Shitennoji Temple, and the purity of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. With a native English speaking long term resident as your local guide, this experience blends history, architecture, and spirituality into a journey you’ll never forget.

This tour is perfect for first-time visitors to Osaka, and small groups (up to a maximum number of 6 participants) who prefer guided intimacy, historical context, and a more relaxed pace.

  • Stroll through the scenic grounds of Osaka Castle, a symbol of Japan’s feudal past.
(NOTE: This tour does NOT enter the castle.)
  • Experience the serenity of Shitennoji Temple, Japan’s oldest officially established Buddhist temple.
  • Cross the iconic arched bridge at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, a rare example of pre-Buddhist architecture.
  • Learn fascinating stories and cultural insights from your native English-speaking guide.

Meet your guide at Osakajokoen Station on the Osaka Loop Line and begin your day at the majestic Osaka Castle, a gleaming white-and-gold fortress surrounded by moats and towering stone walls. Wandering through the park, you will learn the history of the castle and why it was built in this location in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and how it become the political and military heart of the region, anchoring Osaka’s rise as a strategic and economic hub and its pivotal role in Japan’s unification.
(NOTE: This tour does NOT enter the castle.)

After taking a short ride on Osaka’s Metro, you next arrive at Shitennoji, Japan’s oldest officially administered Buddhist temple. Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, it marked the beginning of Buddhism’s influence in Japan and served as a center for learning, welfare, and spirituality, long before Osaka became a city. This serene sanctuary offers a glimpse into Japan’s earliest Buddhist traditions.

From the temple you will have a short walk to Tennoji, where you will have some free time to explore and find your lunch in the Abechika area. It’s underground, which means, it’s cool in the warm months and warm in the cool months!

After lunch, you will take a ride on Osaka’s only remaining public tram to conclude your tour at Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines, founded in the 3rd century. Dedication to sea travel and protection made it vital to Osaka’s maritime culture and spiritual life, and with its unique Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture (straight lines, vivid vermilion, and cypress bark roofs, predating Chinese influence and evoking Japan’s indigenous spirit), and iconic steep arched bridge, (symbolizing the passage into sacred space), the shrine invites reflection and reverence.

Together, these three sites represent the city’s spiritual roots, political ambition, and cultural continuity. They shaped Naniwa’s transformation from a sacred settlement into Osaka, the thriving urban center of Kansai. So yes, they are much more than just landmarks!

The times listed in the itinerary are for reference only and the actual tour may vary depending on actual conditions such as weather and trains.

Our guide will be waiting for you at Osakajokoen station, outside the ticket gate in front of the lockers, between the ticket machines and the convenience store, holding a Great Promenade Tours sign. This station has only one exit, so the guide should be easy to find.

Osakajokoen station is on the JR Osaka Loop Line, station number O07. It takes 10 mins from JR Osaka station, 11 mins from JR Tennoji and 16 minutes from JR Nishi Kujo.

1. Why is this tour only available from October to June?
Simply because the Osaka summers (July, August, September) are just too hot and humid for this kind of walking tour and we don’t want our guests to spend their holiday in hospital.

2. Why does this tour use public transport?
Firstly, Osaka’s PT system is efficient and reliable, and secondly, as a tour company, we make every effort to make our carbon footprint as small as possible, especially in a city as large as Osaka and its large volume of daily traffic. Below are the SDGs we try to maintain and support.
